What is Swedish Massage?
Swedish massage is a whole-body therapeutic massage treatment that works the soft tissues and muscles to help restore health - creating a calming and balancing effect on the nervous system.
The massage therapist will use five main types of massage techniques in a Swedish massage: stroking and gliding; kneading; rubbing; tapping or pounding; vibration
What are the benefits of Swedish massage?
The various Swedish massage techniques, created by the Father of Swedish Massage, Per Henrik Ling, are designed to improve your circulation, soothe your muscles and make you feel more relaxed.
Unlike deep tissue massage, Swedish massage therapy uses softer strokes on the bonier and more delicate parts of the body, and stronger strokes where there is thicker muscle coverage. This adjustment of pressure makes it an ideal massage for relaxation.
Best known for soothing tight muscles and boosting well-being, Swedish massage also offers a whole host of other health benefits, including:
Easing muscular strain by flushing out toxins
Improving blood circulation and blow flow throughout the body
Helping to keep ligaments and tendons supple and improving range of motion
Reducing emotional and physical stress
Easing back pain and chronic pain
What to expect from a Swedish massage
Your massage will probably last around 60 or 90 minutes. Your therapist will give you time to undress privately and lie down on the massage table, which is padded for extra comfort, where you may cover yourself with towels. You don't have to be completely exposed at any point; your therapist will uncover one little bit of you at a time depending on the area she is focusing on. If you're worried about anything, don't hesitate to say so.
Your therapist will assess your complexion at the start of your treatment and choose essential oils or lotions to suit your skin type. She will massage these into your body with a series of strokes and techniques specific to the part of your body and what you want to achieve; for example, this might be long, gliding strokes across your back to help you relax, or kneading or rubbing your shoulders to unwind any knots. The treatment takes into account the delicate or tender areas of your body, so it is comfortable and soothing.
Some therapists like to play music during massage, as it can help you to unwind. Don't be afraid to say if you'd prefer not to have it - or indeed if you're unhappy with anything else in the treatment room. Being content in your surroundings is important for relaxation and will help you sink happily into your massage.
The same goes for talking. Most therapists are very sensitive to how much their client wants to communicate and will limit or encourage conversation accordingly. Some people like to chat a bit; others don't. It doesn't matter as long as you're comfortable, relaxed and receptive.
Afterwards, you'll probably feel quite relaxed and maybe even sleepy, so give yourself plenty of time to unwind. Savour the feeling of having every muscle in your body gently stretched and smoothed out.
What happens during a hot stone massage?
A hot stone massage is a type of massage therapy used to help you relax and ease tense muscles and damaged soft tissues throughout your body. During a hot stone massage, smooth, flat, heated stones are placed on specific parts of your body. The stones are usually made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that retains heat. Hot massage stones are heated to between 130 and 145 degrees.
The stones may be placed:
along your spine
on your chest
on your face
on your palms
on your feet and toes
Massage therapists may hold heated stones as they massage your body using Swedish massage techniques such as:
long strokes
circular movements
vibration
tapping
kneading
Sometimes, cold stones are also used during a hot stone massage. Cold stones may be used after hot stones to calm any engorged blood vessels and to soothe the skin.
6 benefits of hot stone massage
All massages generally fall under the alternative medicine umbrella. They’re becoming a popular complementary therapy for many conditions. Here are some advantages of getting a hot stone massage:
1. Helps relieve muscle tension and pain
Heat has long been used to ease muscle tension and pain. It helps increase blood flow to the affected area. It may also reduce muscle spasms and increase flexibility and range of motion. Cold therapy helps relieve inflammation. Depending on your symptoms, alternating hot and cold stones during your massage may be helpful.
2. Reduces stress and anxiety
It’s the position of the American Massage Therapy Association that “massage therapy can be effective for stress relief.” Research supports their opinion. A 2001 study showed that a ten-minute massage improved cardiovascular responses such as stroke volume. A 1997 study found that 15-minute, onsite chair massages in the workplace significantly reduced stress compared to a 15-minute break without massage.
A 2015 study Trusted Source found that people who underwent abdominal colorectal surgery had less pain, tension, and anxiety after receiving post-operative massage.
3. Promotes sleep
A 2006 literature review found massage may be an alternative to sleeping pills in adults with insomnia. The research showed that back massage helped promote relaxation and sleep. A 2001 study showed that infants with sleep problems who were given a 15-minute massage by their parents went to sleep faster. They were also more alert, active, and positive upon awakening. Massage is thought to help you enjoy more restorative sleep, although it’s not completely understood why.
4. May help relieve symptoms of autoimmune diseases
Hot stone massage may relieve painful conditions such as fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes widespread, chronic pain. According to a 2002 study, people with fibromyalgia who received a 30-minute massage slept longer, had fewer trigger points, and had decreased levels of substance P (a substance involved in transmitting pain signals) than people with the condition who received relaxation therapy. More research is needed, however, before massage becomes a standard fibromyalgia treatment.
A 2013 studyTrusted Source found that people with rheumatoid arthritis may benefit from a moderate-pressure massage, such as hot stone massage. Participants in the study experienced less pain, greater grip strength, and a greater range of motion after one month of massage therapy.
5. May help decrease cancer symptoms
A large, three-year study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management examined how massage affected pain, fatigue, stress and anxiety, nausea, and depression in 1,290 people with cancer. The study showed massage, especially Swedish massage, improved cancer symptoms, even in those with substantial symptoms. Researchers believe the comforting use of human touch played a role.
6. May boost immunity
Massage may give your immune system a boost. According to a 2010 studyTrusted Source, a single session of Swedish massage therapy had a positive and acute impact on immunity. Blood samples taken before and after the massage showed a decrease in arginine-vasopressin, a hormone that helps regulate blood pressure and water retention.
What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy uses essential oils to make you feel calm, relaxed, or energised. The oils work with your sense of smell: you can inhale them, bathe in them or be massaged with them.
What are the benefits of aromatherapy oils?
Aromatherapy uses warm essential oils to activate your sense of smell and increase your sense of well-being. The oils are massaged into your skin, dropped into bathing water, or blended with other oils or steam for you to inhale.
The essential oils used in aromatherapy are extracted from raw plant material, which may be flowers, berries, bark, wood, roots, leaves, resin, peel or seeds. Only a small amount of essential oil is needed, which is blended with a larger amount of "carrier" oil, such as jojoba, sweet almond or grapeseed. Commonly used essential oils include flowers oils such as camomile, lavender, rose, geranium and jasmine, and oils extracted from trees such as eucalyptus, peppermint and sandalwood.
Aromatherapy works on the basis that the smell of the essential oils triggers the limbic system: the part of the brain linked with emotion. This is why a scent can affect how you feel, and help you relax. Smell is a very powerful sense that can also work with your memory. Certain smells can remind you of events, people and places. The smell can also take you back to how you felt about what you're remembering: your emotional memory.
The perceived healing power of essential oils is a main attraction of aromatherapy in complementary therapies. It is also the main question for the sceptic. Very little scientific research has been conducted into the efficacy of aromatherapy. One main difficulty is that it is virtually impossible to carry out randomised double-blind studies involving different smells. Studies have shown that lavender and rosemary decrease the stress hormone, cortisol (1), but many claims of aromatherapy enhancing emotional, physical or spiritual health cannot be tested scientifically. What we do have is many people giving anecdotal reports of improvements in these areas.
Aromatherapy and essential oils are often used to:
* relieve stress and anxiety
* promote overall wellness
* help you to sleep better; whether you have problems getting to sleep (insomnia) or staying asleep
* help you relax
* relieve tiredness or aching muscles
* soothe chronic pain
* aid concentration
* relieve some types of psoriasis
Holistic aromatherapy massage can have short-term benefits for psychological well-being and a positive though not sustained effect in reducing anxiety.
What to expect from aromatherapy
Depending on the aromatherapy treatment you have chosen, you can decide how much or how little you want to wear. Essential oils can stain, so it might be wise to bring old clothes.
Watch what you eat and drink beforehand; some essential oils, such as clary sage, don't go well with alcohol and could make you feel sick.
At the start of a typical aromatherapy consultation, your therapist will ask about your medical history, general health, diet, sleep patterns and lifestyle. This is to help her decide which oils are most appropriate for you. Aromatherapists are not trained to make a medical diagnosis.
After choosing your essential oils, the massage therapist will blend them with a carrier oil (such as grapeseed or almond oil), then gently warm the mixture. Adding heat to the oil helps your skin to absorb it more effectively.
Depending on the treatment you're having, the therapist will massage the oil into your hands, feet or entire body. Your massage will be smooth and flowing, designed to instil a sense of relaxation and calm.
Every session is tailored towards you, your health and your mood at the time, so every session is unique. Aromatherapy usually lasts for about an hour, although your initial consultation might take longer.
Afterwards, you'll probably want to lie back and enjoy smelling beautiful for a while. Take time out to relax before you dash off anywhere. You may like to treat yourself to some essential oils to take home, too: use them for baths, in oil burners or for inhalation.
What is Cupping Therapy?
Cupping is an alternative therapy that involves suctioning the skin with glass, plastic, or silicone cups. It may help improve blood flow, boost immune function, remove toxins, and reduce pain.
Have you noticed more and more celebrities showing up to events with little round marks on their backs? These come from cupping therapy. But what is it?
Cupping is a type of alternative therapy that involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. This suction is thought to improve the flow of energy in the body and facilitate healing.
One of the oldest medical texts to mention cupping therapy is Eber’s papyrus (1550 B.C.) from Ancient Egypt, though cupping is a part of many ancient healing systems, including Chinese, Unani, traditional Korean, and Tibetan.
Greek physician Hippocrates, often referred to as the “father” of medicine, even compiled descriptions of cupping techniques.
These days, cupping therapy is usually found as a treatment offered by practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Proponents believe the suction helps facilitate the flow of “qi” in the body. Qi is a Chinese word meaning life force.
Many believe that cupping helps balance yin and yang, or the negative and positive, within the body. Restoring balance between these two extremes is thought to help with the body’s resistance to pathogens as well as its ability to increase blood flow and reduce pain.
Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed. This may relieve muscle tension, which can improve overall blood flow and promote cell repair. It may also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue.
People use cupping to complement their care for a host of symptoms and conditions.
What is Reiki?
If you're not familiar with Reiki, it's a powerful Japanese healing technique that uses hands-on energy transfer to balance and harmonize the body's energy system. This can alleviate physical and emotional discomfort, promote relaxation, and enhance your overall quality of life.
At Synergy Body & Mind, we believe in the transformative power of Reiki as a holistic healing approach that can help you connect with your inner self, promote self-awareness, and achieve optimal health and well-being.
What is Crystal Healing?
It is non-invasive and works alongside other treatments or as a stand-alone therapy.
The aim of a crystal healing treatment is always to treat the whole person and to bring balance within the individual's subtle energies.
A skilled therapist places intuitively chosen crystals that are laid on and around the clients.
Then under the intuitive guidance of the crystals and sometimes higher dimensional helpers, they apply powerful healing techniques to crystalise the channelled healing energy.
The client's body is gently reminded of its own connection to nature and spirit (‘All That Is’).
By reinstating this connection and using other powerful crystal healing techniques, a natural recalibration often occurs that brings with it the benefits of conscious health and wellbeing.
Bioresonance Therapy
Bioresonance is a system with the ability to check and analyse all of the automatic processes and internal functions of the body, which can then produce a functional health assessment of the body’s tissues getting to the root of any problems.
This analysis allows us to make a diagnosis and establish a treatment using oscillatory field frequencies. It is extremely useful to detect functional disorders, followed by the second part of the session where we can initiate an adequate treatment to correct the disorder and return to the organism to its normal physiological activity.
Once the data has been obtained, the advanced software is able to compare against a database of almost 14,000 substances which allows the following
Pathology
The highest check of pathologies, diseases, chronic illnesses, Joint pains, muscle pains, energy levels, stress levels, unknown diseases, depression.
Bacteria
Data of bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi, etc… which can be treated by the system itself.
Toxins
Data checks for toxins, radiations, dental materials, heavy metals, free radicals, organs toxicity, poisoning.
Homeopathic Remedies
The most suitable frequencies in homeopathic remedies, phytotherapy, herbal remedies.
Microelements
Microelements regulate hormones helping to regulate growth, development, and functioning of the immune and the reproductive systems.
Vitamins
Amino acids, vitamins, batch flowers, dialytic water, regulating energy levels.
Nutrition
A food sensitivity test (Food intolerance test) in which we obtain a list of beneficial, neutral and harmful foods for the patient, providing the best advice for nutrition.
Sound Healing/Sound Bath
Sound Healing is a powerful therapy that combines different healing sounds, music, and sound healing instruments to improve our multidimensional well-being by creating a beautiful experience where all layers of our luminous energy field (body, mind, soul, spirit) are awakened gently and lovingly.
Integral Sound Healing is highly effective at triggering our relaxation response, which counters the many symptoms caused by chronic stress, while helping to balance our whole being.
Sound Healing Instruments that are easy to play can be applied both on the body and off-the-body, whilst also incorporating vocal sounds and tones.
Sound Therapy techniques are delivered using instruments such as Tibetan and crystal singing bowls, gongs, drums, tuning forks, and more, both during a one-on-one sound healing session or sound bath.
The vibrational forces of sound are emitted from the movement or vibration of all matter. They manifest in a constant cacophony of sound waves, endlessly resonating in the universal sea of consciousness.
These sounds are both audible and inaudible to the human senses. Regardless of our capacity to hear or feel sound waves, they manifest as cause and effect, not only to us as human beings but also to the wider world around us. Sound waves wash over us at every second of every minute, and hour of every day and continue to vibrate endlessly.
The sound vibrations of the sound healing instruments penetrate deep into the tissue. This improves blood circulation and metabolism, regulates muscle tension and deeply stimulates the tissue. Moreover, regeneration and repair mechanisms are stimulated. Sound healing is both activating and relaxing – so it also has a refreshing effect.
The oscillation, or resonance, of molecules, triggered by the sound vibrations cause alternating compression and relaxation of cells. It is, in effect, a form of massage at a cellular level deep within the tissue undergoing the treatment.
